Japan faces rising fatigue and heat risks as rainy season approaches

A nationwide survey of 290 Japanese adults found that more than 70% experience fatigue or drowsiness before the onset of the rainy season, with the most cited cause being a decline in sleep quality (34.5%). Other factors include pressure changes, high humidity, stress and lack of exercise. While one‑third of respondents take no specific action, many try to secure more sleep time or stay well‑hydrated.

At the same time, Japan’s weather services warn that Typhoon No. 6 is moving northward, bringing the possibility of heavy rain to the Kii Peninsula on June 2‑3—the first typhoon landfall in 14 years. Officials caution that the combination of the typhoon with the impending rainy‑front could trigger intense rainfall and “rainy‑season heatstroke,” especially as the summer is expected to be hotter than average due to a strong El Niño event. The public is advised to monitor forecasts, use air‑conditioning or fans, and avoid prolonged exposure to hot, humid conditions.
