Japan beer giants raided over suspected price-fixing cartel

The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) has launched a compulsory investigation into Japan's four largest brewers—Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Spirits, and Sapporo Breweries—over suspected price-fixing. The companies collectively control more than 90% of the domestic beer and low-malt beverage market.

Authorities conducted on-site raids at the companies' offices to investigate allegations that sales executives coordinated the timing and scale of wholesale price increases. Reports suggest that officials may have held unofficial meetings, potentially through a group known as 'Ichimokukai,' to exchange information on price hikes for beer and other beer-like products.

Investigators are examining whether this coordination protected corporate profitability at the expense of consumers, retailers, and restaurants. The JFTC is also considering whether to file criminal complaints with prosecutors. All four companies have confirmed they are cooperating with the investigation.
