Japan film project to depict Shinzo Abe assassination
A film project is reportedly in development to depict the 2022 assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The production is described as a secret project led by a prominent director, with filming expected to begin this autumn.
Reports suggest that actor Masaki Suda has been cast to portray the gunman, Tetsuya Yamagami. Industry sources indicate Suda has been growing his hair to match Yamagami’s appearance during the period following the shooting. The film is expected to follow the events surrounding the assassination, the investigation into Yamagami’s motives involving the World Peace Unification Family Federation (formerly the Unification Church), and the subsequent legal proceedings.
While the subject matter has previously been considered taboo in the Japanese film industry due to its sensational nature, creators aim to portray the incident as a historical event that must be preserved. The film is expected to face significant public scrutiny upon its release.
