Japan food service industry faces rising costs and shifting pricing strategies
Rising inflation in Japan is significantly impacting dining habits and the pricing strategies of major food service chains. At CoCo Ichibanya, customers have reported meal costs exceeding 2,000 yen when including various toppings and late-night surcharges, leading some to reduce their orders to manage expenses.
In contrast to the general trend of price hikes, the conveyor belt sushi chain Uobei is gaining market attention through strategic pricing. While competitors in urban areas like Shibuya have raised their minimum plate prices to 145 or 150 yen, Uobei has expanded its 110-yen menu options. This move, described as a de facto price reduction in certain urban locations, aims to maintain affordability amidst broader economic pressures.
