Japan funeral costs: Survey reveals widespread uncertainty and anxiety
A survey conducted by NEXER Group and Sun Life involving 500 participants in Japan highlights significant public uncertainty regarding funeral expenses. Approximately 65.6% of respondents stated they have no knowledge of the market rates for funeral costs, while 59.2% expressed feeling anxious about the financial aspects of end-of-life services.
Among those who feel anxious, 70.3% cited the inability to know the total cost in advance as their primary concern, followed by 55.4% who worry about unexpected additional fees. Even among respondents who claimed to know the market rates, estimates for a standard funeral (including wake and farewell ceremony) varied widely, ranging from under 500,000 yen to over 2 million yen.
Individual cases also underscore the complexities of funeral planning. One case study illustrates how a family opting for a small-scale funeral through a third-party funeral director faced complications with their ancestral temple. The temple requested clarification regarding the officiating monk and the posthumous name (kaimyo) before allowing the interment of remains, highlighting the importance of understanding cemetery usage conditions and religious protocols in advance.
