Japan high-income earners: 38,000 people reported over 100 million yen
According to the National Tax Agency’s Statistical Yearbook for fiscal year 2024, approximately 38,000 individuals in Japan filed tax returns reporting an annual income exceeding 100 million yen.
Data shows a significant concentration of high earners in urban areas, with Tokyo accounting for 15,397 individuals, or roughly 40% of the national total. Other prefectures with more than 1,000 such earners include Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi, Saitama, Chiba, Hyogo, and Fukuoka. In contrast, Tottori Prefecture reported the lowest number with 37 individuals.
The composition of this income reveals that high earners are not solely reliant on salaries. Only about 30% of those reporting over 100 million yen are classified as salary earners; the remaining 60% primarily derive their income from dividends, capital gains, and other sources. The statistics specifically cover those required to file a final tax return, meaning they do not include general employees whose tax obligations are fully settled through year-end adjustments.
