Japan holds events to prevent fading of Great East Japan Earthquake memories

Efforts to prevent the fading of memories regarding the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake continue through various regional initiatives in Japan.

In Tokyo, an event titled ‘Reconstruction and Beyond 2024’ is scheduled from March 7 to March 11 at the Shiodome Cio Site. The event aims to showcase the reconstruction progress and charms of the four Tohoku prefectures—Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima. Activities include video messages, panel exhibitions, VR experiences, and the sale of local specialties and sake. Additionally, fundraising activities will be held at the venue to support victims of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

In Iwate Prefecture, the Iwate Disaster Prevention and Reconstruction Research Group is conducting ongoing study sessions. Established in 2024, the group focuses on verifying the recovery and reconstruction processes, particularly centered on Iwate, and proposing future directions for disaster prevention and well-being. The sessions include commentary on texts regarding the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami and opportunities for participant discussion.
