Japan holds first expert meeting on civil service in AI era

The Japanese government has convened its first expert panel to discuss the future of the national civil service in the age of artificial intelligence. The meeting aims to address how AI can be utilized for human resource development and to redefine the roles and necessary skills for government employees.

Minister for National Civil Service Reform Hisashi Matsumoto emphasized the importance of introducing a new vision for civil servants to attract highly skilled talent. The panel includes consultants specializing in private-sector human resource and AI strategies, as well as experts in AI-driven talent management.

The government intends to finalize a direction regarding the required skills and training methods for civil servants by January 2026, in response to the rapid evolution of AI technology.
