Japan hosts over 336,000 international students

Japan is increasingly positioning itself as a global hub for higher education. As of May 1, 2024, the country hosted 336,708 international students, according to data from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).

For prospective students, the educational landscape offers various English-taught degrees. Public university costs are relatively predictable, with admission fees around ¥282,000 and annual tuition approximately ¥535,800. The visa process is driven by the Certificate of Eligibility, which typically takes one to three months to process.

International students are permitted to work part-time, though regulations cap labor at 28 hours per week during terms and eight hours per day during long holidays, subject to specific permissions. Accommodation options range from university dormitories, costing between ¥20,000 and ¥50,000 per month, to private rentals which require deposits and key money.
