Japan hosts water science and disaster preparedness workshops for children

Various educational initiatives in Japan have recently focused on teaching children about the importance of water through hands-on science and disaster preparedness workshops.

At the Samukawa Water Purification Plant in Kanagawa Prefecture, Professor Ko Okada of Tokai University and several science communicators conducted experiments for families. The session included demonstrations on how clouds form, vacuum experiments using pressure changes, and the creation of air cannons to engage young participants in scientific principles.

In Setagaya, Tokyo, Suido Kiko Co., Ltd. held a workshop titled ‘The Secrets of Water and Disaster Prevention’ for elementary school students and their parents. Members of the company’s Emergency Water Assistance Team (EWAT) used quizzes and practical demonstrations to teach the necessity of water during emergencies. Participants used the ‘Safety M’, a manual water purification device that operates without electricity, to transform turbid water into clean water, highlighting the importance of water security during natural disasters.
