Japan household savings median reported by J-FLEC
According to the ‘2025 Survey on Household Financial Behavior’ conducted by the Japan Financial Literacy Education Center (J-FLEC), the median financial asset holdings for individuals in their 40s are 1 million yen for single-person households and 5 million yen for two-or-more-person households.
Financial assets in this context include savings, stocks, investment trusts, and installment-type insurance, though they exclude routine cash held in bank accounts for daily expenses. For a single person in their 40s, a savings amount of 3 million yen is 2 million yen above the median, whereas for a multi-person household, 3 million yen is 2 million yen below the median.
Financial experts suggest that while medians provide a useful benchmark, individual needs vary based on family structure, mortgage balances, and upcoming expenses such as education or retirement. Strategies to increase savings include reviewing fixed costs, utilizing ‘pre-emptive savings’ (transferring funds to separate accounts immediately upon receiving salary), and considering tax-exempt investment frameworks like NISA, provided there is an understanding of market risks.
