Japan implements AI to combat investment fraud

Japan is implementing artificial intelligence to strengthen its efforts against investment fraud schemes. The initiative, announced by the Consumer Affairs Agency on September 1, aims to identify early warning signs within consumer complaints.

The new AI system will analyze the language used in complaints, solicitation methods, and similarities to historical fraud cases. By examining data from the PIO-NET database, which collects approximately 900,000 consumer consultations annually, officials hope to detect malicious schemes and distressed businesses before they collapse.

This technology will complement existing keyword searches by analyzing context and identifying recurring solicitation patterns or organizational structures. The system is designed to recognize warning signs across disparate complaints that might otherwise appear unrelated. Authorities noted that these measures target schemes promising high returns or stable dividends, including those involving foreign investment products and real estate.
