Japan implements various food loss reduction initiatives
Various initiatives are underway in Japan to combat food loss and support food security. In Iida City, a food drive is being held at the City Consumer Affairs Center until October 23 as part of food loss reduction month.
In Oita Prefecture, Oita Mirai Shinkin Bank has launched a food drive across all its branches, running until October 20. The bank is collecting unopened, room-temperature stable food items with at least two months of shelf life remaining. These donations will be distributed to children's cafeterias in seven cities and towns through Food Bank Oita.
On a national level, the Mogumogu Action 2026 symposium was held at Tokyo University of Agriculture on October 1. The event brought together government bodies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Consumer Affairs Agency, alongside academic researchers and private companies. The symposium focused on moving beyond simple awareness to implementing effective, verifiable strategies for reducing food loss across the supply chain.
