Japan increases bear safety measures following recent attacks

Authorities in Japan are intensifying safety measures following recent bear attacks and sightings. In Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, officials held a meeting after a man in his 50s was bitten on the arm and leg while running. The city reported 157 bear sightings this fiscal year and is expanding warning signage, particularly near areas where children play, to account for increased male bear activity during the summer breeding season.

Similarly, campgrounds in Tochigi Prefecture are ramping up precautions as they enter the busy summer and autumn seasons. Measures include installing electric fences, using firecrackers, and clearing brush to eliminate hiding spots. Local authorities are also emphasizing the importance of proper waste management by campers to prevent attracting wildlife.
