Japan inheritance survey: Selling homes most common intent

A survey conducted by AZWAY among 300 individuals aged 30 to 50 reveals significant gaps in preparation regarding the inheritance of family homes in Japan. Approximately 75.7% of respondents believe there is a possibility they will inherit their parents' homes.

When asked about their intentions following inheritance, 30.7% stated they would sell the property, making it the most common individual choice. However, opinions are divided: 35.3% favor utilization (living in, renting, or passing it down), 34.0% favor disposal (selling or demolishing), and 27.3% have not yet decided on a course of action.

Despite the high likelihood of inheritance, only 4.7% of families have already discussed and finalized a plan. Major concerns include taxes (47.7%), uncertainty regarding costs for sale or demolition (39.0%), and the difficulty of discussing the matter while parents are still alive (37.3%). Additionally, 79.0% of respondents are unaware of the maintenance and management costs associated with keeping a vacant house.
