Japan intelligence agency sees surge in student interest

University students in Japan have shown overwhelming interest in government intelligence roles, with more than 200 applications received for an event hosted by the Public Security Intelligence Agency that sought only 15 participants. This surge in interest is more than ten times the original quota and represents a significant increase from last year.

The high level of engagement comes as the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi works to reform and bolster Japan’s intelligence capabilities. Recent government actions include the July launch of the National Intelligence Council and the National Intelligence Bureau.

During the experience event, students participated in simulated human intelligence operations involving potential cyberattacks on infrastructure. Officials noted that public interest in intelligence organizations is growing, potentially influenced by popular media, even as the general trend of students seeking government employment continues to decline.
