Japan Issues Health Guidance for Disaster Evacuees on Economy Class Syndrome

Following the December 8 offshore earthquake off Aomori Prefecture, Japanese authorities warned individuals living in vehicles during evacuation about the risk of economy class syndrome – a condition where prolonged cramped postures can cause blood clots that may lead to fatal pulmonary embolism. The advisory outlined preventive steps such as increasing daytime walking, exiting the vehicle every 4–5 hours, stretching the legs, staying hydrated, and using compression stockings. It also listed warning signs that should prompt immediate medical consultation.

Separately, Professor Tomohiko Akahoshi of Kyushu University’s emergency‑medicine department provided broader health advice for displaced residents. He emphasized posture adjustments during vehicle sleep, regular short walks, leg‑massage exercises, adequate water intake, and continued oral‑care to prevent aspiration pneumonia. Additional recommendations included using flat sleeping positions, avoiding prolonged couch‑sleeping in shelters, and employing proper bedding such as cardboard beds to reduce heat‑stroke risk.
