Japan issues heatstroke alerts for 26 prefectures

Severe heatwaves are affecting large portions of Japan, prompting authorities to issue heatstroke alerts across 26 prefectures. The warnings cover regions including Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and much of Kyushu.

Temperatures have reached dangerous levels, with highs of 38.2 degrees Celsius recorded in Wakayama and Tokushima. Other cities, including Nagoya and Nara, are expected to see highs around 38 degrees. In the Hokuriku region, which recently experienced heavy rainfall, temperatures are also expected to remain high.

The Japan Meteorological Agency and the Ministry of the Environment are advising the public to take precautions against heat exhaustion. Recommended measures include using air conditioning, staying hydrated with water and salts, and avoiding outdoor activities where possible. Authorities emphasized the importance of monitoring the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, which measures heat stress by combining solar radiation, humidity, and temperature, rather than relying solely on conventional air temperature.
