Japan issues national request for disaster preparedness supplies

The Japanese government is preparing a national emergency request to urge citizens to reinforce reserves of food, water, and essential supplies. Disaster management minister Goshi Hosono announced that the call will coincide with the launch of the new Disaster Management Agency on November 2, 2026.

Authorities recommend that households maintain a minimum of three days of provisions, though keeping a week's worth of supplies is preferred. The goal is to reduce immediate dependence on emergency services in the event that infrastructure, such as roads, electricity, or water systems, is damaged by natural disasters.

While social media rumors have linked these recommendations to imminent wars or nuclear conflicts, officials clarify that these are standard civil protection measures. The planning addresses potential scenarios including the Nankai Trough, earthquakes in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and volcanic activity from Mount Fuji. These measures are part of long-term disaster prevention policies rather than an immediate seismic alert.
