A shallow magnitude 7.1 (USGS later listed as 6.8) earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island on 28 July 2026 at 16:27 local time. The quake’s hypocenter was about 10 km deep and produced the maximum Shindo intensity of 7.

At least twelve residential buildings collapsed, four people were trapped, and roughly fifty people were injured and taken to hospitals. Power outages affected between 45 000 and 48 000 households, and JR Kyushu suspended Shinkansen and other train services for safety checks. No damage or operational anomalies were reported at the nearby Genkai, Sendai and Ikata nuclear power plants.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for up to one‑metre waves along the Ariake and Yatsushiro coasts, which was later canceled after no tsunami materialized. An explosion was reported at Aeon Mall Kumamoto, though no fatalities were confirmed. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered a task‑force and urged residents to stay vigilant; the Self‑Defense Forces deployed aircraft to assess damage. Tremors were also felt in South Korea, and travel groups from Hong Kong were reported safe.
