Japan job hunting trends show rising AI use and salary increases

Recent surveys by Mynavi Corporation and Leading Mark Co., Ltd. reveal evolving trends in the Japanese job market for university students. Mynavi reports that approximately 84.9% of students graduating in 2027 have used AI for job hunting activities, such as refining entry sheets and interview preparation. Additionally, about 90% of companies have increased starting salaries to attract talent, with many also emphasizing benefits like housing allowances.

Students are increasingly engaging in “pinpoint job hunting,” focusing on a small number of specific companies. Among those receiving multiple job offers, there is a growing trend of “satisfactory employment,” where students continue to compare companies even after receiving initial offers to ensure a well-reasoned decision.

A separate study by Leading Mark focusing on high-achieving students (Imperial University/Waseda/Keio tier) shows that 47.4% of students graduating in 2028 hope to receive their first job offer by December of their third year. However, there is a significant gap between when students want an offer and when they want to finish the job hunting process; while many want offers by year-end, only 6.6% wish to conclude their job search by that same time.
