Japan launches N-E.X.T. High School Initiative to address STEM talent shortages

Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has launched the ‘N-E.X.T. High School Initiative’ to address projected shortages in STEM talent and regional industry workers by 2040. During a kickoff event in Tokyo, Minister Yohei Matsumoto announced the creation of a High School Education Reform Promotion Fund, part of a broader plan involving approximately 300 billion yen to support model schools nationwide. Currently, 69 high schools have been selected to implement advanced technology and regional talent development programs.

In academic and research developments, Tohoku University has established the ‘WD x Tohoku University AI Data Infrastructure Co-Creation Research Institute’ in partnership with Western Digital to manage increasing data volumes. Additionally, MEXT released a report proposing the construction of ‘AI-ready’ data foundations for life science research through closer coordination of existing research support projects.

Other educational updates include the University of Tokyo ranking 30th in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). In the private sector, the International Business Communication Association announced that digital examination vouchers will be implemented for the TOEIC program starting July 2027 to enhance security measures.
