Japan launches Shogei submarine to bolster maritime security
Japan has launched the Shogei, the seventh vessel in its Taigei-class submarine program, at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Kobe. The 84-meter submarine, costing approximately 80.5 billion yen, is designed to enhance underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Shogei features advanced diesel-electric propulsion and is expected to be delivered to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in March 2028 following further testing. This expansion of the diesel-electric fleet is a strategic response to the rapid growth of the Chinese navy.
In addition to expanding its conventional fleet, the Japanese government is exploring more advanced maritime capabilities, including the potential integration of vertical launch systems and the consideration of nuclear propulsion to increase operational range and capability.
