Japan launches various crowdfunding initiatives for social and community support
Various Japanese regional and non-profit initiatives are launching crowdfunding campaigns through the ‘furusato nozei’ (hometown tax) system to address social and community needs.
Musubie, a certified NPO, is beginning a crowdfunding campaign in Shibuya City on October 15, 2026, to support children's cafeterias nationwide. These facilities, which number over 12,600, face challenges from rising prices. Funds will support regional networks, research, and disaster prevention projects.
In Himeji City, the Board of Education has launched a project to reform school environments, including creating specialized spaces for student autonomy and inclusive classroom designs for special needs education. Meanwhile, Itabashi City is seeking donations to promote its ‘Picture Book Town’ initiative, aiming to foster a creative city through festivals and workshops.
Addressing food waste, Kojiro Akiyama of the Children's Cafeteria Support Organization is promoting the ‘Mottainai Donation Bar’ concept. This initiative seeks to repurpose alcohol and other goods that are typically discarded due to packaging issues or strict distribution rules, turning potential waste into resources for community support.
