Japan LDP lawmakers launch coalition to boost trading card industry
Around 20 members of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party have formed a parliamentary coalition to promote the rapidly expanding trading‑card sector. The group, chaired by House of Representatives member Seiji Kihara, will work on establishing rules to curb counterfeit cards, bulk‑purchase resale and other market abuses, while improving transparency to help the industry compete globally.
Industry bodies and officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry briefed the lawmakers on market conditions. The Japan Toy Association reports the domestic market reached roughly 338 billion yen (about US$2.1 billion) in the 2025 fiscal year, up from 88 billion yen in 2017, highlighting its steady growth and the sector’s role in regional development through tournaments and events.
