Japan lifts sanctions on 16 Syrian entities and ministries
Japan has announced the partial lifting of sanctions against Syria, removing asset freezes and restrictions on 16 Syrian entities. The decision, made by the Japanese Cabinet, includes key government bodies such as the Ministries of Defense and Interior, as well as the General Directorate of Political Security.
In the economic sector, the relief extends to major institutions in the oil, banking, and telecommunications industries. Notable entities include the Syrian Petroleum Company, the Commercial Bank of Syria, the Syrian Telecommunications Company (Syriatel), and several state oil and transport corporations.
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated the move considers recent developments in Syria and aims to support bilateral relations. Government spokesperson Kihara Minoru noted that many of the unlisted entities are “expected to play a role in the reconstruction of Syria.” This follows the restoration of diplomatic ties between Tokyo and Damascus in December 2025.
Despite these changes, Japan will maintain sanctions against 59 individuals and 15 remaining entities. The relief is seen as a signal of support for the government of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which was formed following the collapse of the previous administration in late 2024.
