Japan-linked war memorials in Myanmar begin reconstruction
Reconstruction and repair work has commenced on Japanese war memorials in Myanmar’s Sagaing region. The site, which includes a Buddhist pagoda and stone monuments dedicated to Japanese soldiers killed during World War II, was severely damaged by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in March last year.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Saturday, attended by officials from the Japanese Embassy in Myanmar and representatives from a local private organization managing the project. The Buddhist tower, originally constructed around 1976, is slated for a complete rebuild. Additionally, stone monuments bearing the names of the war dead require repairs and relocation because the earthquake rendered parts of the inscriptions unreadable.
The project, which aims to strengthen Japan-Myanmar relations, is expected to be completed by March 2027. During World War II, Myanmar served as a significant battlefield and retreat route for the Imperial Japanese military following the 1944 Battle of Imphal.
