Japan local officials face scrutiny over high-cost overseas inspection trips

A civic group in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, has filed a formal protest against the Mayor and city council members regarding the high cost of an upcoming overseas inspection trip to Hawaii. The Fukuyama Citizens' Ombudsman Conference requested information disclosure on the Mayor's overseas trips over the past five years, citing suspicious travel and accommodation expenses. The group is calling for the cancellation of a trip scheduled for late September, which involves nine people and is estimated to cost approximately 14 million yen.

In a separate development, Shiga Prefecture Governor Taizo Mikazuki visited Michigan, USA, to engage in local diplomacy and sign a joint declaration for sister-state partnerships. While the Governor stated he is scrutinizing the travel budget, the trip has drawn attention amid broader discussions regarding the transparency and necessity of high-cost overseas inspections by local government officials in Japan.
