Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force member dismissed for extortion attempt
A 23-year-old member of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has been dismissed from service following an attempted extortion of a 12-year-old boy. Terumi Ishibashi, a petty officer serving aboard the submarine Unryu at the Kure Base, was removed from his position effective October 28.
The incident occurred in Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture, during the member's leave in January. According to the Kure District Command, Ishibashi demanded 300,000 yen from the child to cover the cost of a friend's lost motorcycle. He allegedly threatened the boy, stating, “If you don't comply, I will burn your house down and kill your parents.”
Reports indicate that Ishibashi had initially stepped in to mediate between the child and a friend who had lost a motorcycle, but he became enraged by the child's perceived attitude. Ishibashi was arrested by the Nara Prefectural Police on suspicion of attempted extortion. Yoshihiro Eiya, the captain of the Unryu, stated that the command would strengthen education and guidance for personnel to prevent any recurrence.
