Japan marriage trends show declining marriage rates and rising matchmaking fatigue
Marriage rates in Japan continue to decline, with 2023 statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reporting 474,717 marriages. The average age for first marriages has reached 31.1 for husbands and 29.7 for wives.
Data from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research indicates a downward trend in the percentage of unmarried individuals aged 18 to 34 who intend to marry. Factors contributing to this shift include economic anxieties regarding income and employment, changing social dynamics via SNS, and evolving values regarding independence.
Psychological challenges such as “learned helplessness” are also affecting those using matchmaking services. Individuals experiencing repetitive failure in digital dating environments often report burnout and a loss of motivation, a phenomenon described as the brain entering a “power-saving mode” due to perceived futility.
