Japan Meteorological Agency warns of decade-level extreme heat

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued an early weather information report regarding extreme heat, warning that temperatures across much of Japan could reach levels seen only once in a decade.

Starting around August 17, several regions including Tohoku, Hokuriku, Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and parts of Kyushu are expected to experience significantly higher temperatures than average. The Kanto-Koshin region is projected to see similar spikes starting around August 18. Authorities have advised citizens to manage their health carefully to prevent heatstroke and to monitor agricultural products.

In response to ongoing heat concerns, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is promoting various countermeasures. These include the use of a heat map to check the heat index for the upcoming seven days and the expansion of cooling shelters and ‘TOKYO Cool Share Spots,’ which are designated locations where the public can seek relief from the heat.
