Japan minimum wage increases set for Tokyo and Miyazaki

Minimum wage increases are being implemented across Japan, with significant adjustments reported in both regional and metropolitan areas. In Miyazaki Prefecture, the local minimum wage council has recommended raising the hourly rate from 1,023 yen to 1,085 yen, a 62-yen increase. This amount exceeds the central council's guideline of 56 yen and represents the second-highest increase in the prefecture's history.

In Tokyo, the minimum wage is set to rise to 1,280 yen starting in October, marking the sixth consecutive year of increases. While the government aims for a national average of 1,500 yen, the target timeline has been adjusted to the early 2030s.

Economic analysts note that these mandatory increases may lead to wage compression. Because minimum wage hikes are legally required, companies may struggle to balance these non-discretionary costs with discretionary raises for mid-career employees, particularly in regional areas where small and medium-sized enterprises face higher pressure from rising raw material costs.
