Japan minimum wage to rise to 1,177 yen average
The Central Minimum Wage Council has announced guidelines for the 2026 regional minimum wage revisions in Japan. If implemented, the national weighted average will reach 1,176 to 1,177 yen, representing a 55 to 56 yen increase (approximately 4.9% to 5.0%) from the previous year.
While the rate of increase has slowed compared to the previous year's 6.3%, the hike remains high relative to the slowing pace of inflation. Although the upward deviation from central guidelines has decreased, 33 prefectures are still expected to set rates above the initial recommendations to mitigate regional population outflows.
The revisions pose significant challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), requiring careful management of total labor costs, including monthly salaried employees whose hourly conversions must be monitored. Experts note that local councils face pressure to improve transparency, as many currently fail to provide timely or specific economic justifications for their pricing decisions.
