Japan municipalities implement school meal initiatives for students

Local governments in Japan are implementing various initiatives to support children and working parents regarding school meals and summer nutrition.

In Yokohama, after-school care facilities have begun providing lunches during long school breaks to alleviate the burden on working parents who struggle to prepare daily bento boxes. These meals, provided by vendors and subsidized by the city and the Children and Families Agency, cost approximately 440 yen. While the adoption rate of such lunch programs in after-school care has risen from 43.0% in 2024 to 52.1% in 2025, implementation varies by municipality due to concerns over allergy management and hygiene.

Meanwhile, Warabi City has launched a program inviting elementary and junior high school students to design their own school lunch menus. The initiative encourages children to consider nutritional balance and the use of local ingredients, such as leeks and daikon. Winning menu ideas are scheduled to be displayed at the Warabi City Hall and implemented in school lunches starting in November 2026.
