Taiwanese man detained in suspected insurance fraud murder in Japan

Taiwanese prosecutors have detained a man suspected of orchestrating the murder of his wife, 38-year-old Jing Yun-rong, to claim high-value insurance payouts. The victim was found dead in a hotel in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, on October 19, with a deep wound to her neck.

Investigators believe the suspect entered into a sham marriage with Jing and encouraged her to travel to Japan alone. He had reportedly taken out multiple insurance policies for her, totaling approximately 30 million Taiwan dollars (roughly 146 million Japanese yen).

Japanese police previously arrested 27-year-old Yang Min-han, a fellow traveler from Taiwan, for weapons violations. Taiwanese authorities have identified a suspected connection between the arrested woman and the victim's husband, who was detained upon his return to Taiwan on October 24.

In response to the case, Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission addressed concerns regarding "moral hazard" in insurance, noting that existing legal frameworks and multi-stage screening processes are in place to prevent fraudulent claims and unauthorized policies.
