Japan national football team announces 31-man squad for upcoming friendlies

Samurai Blue Japan national football team Hajime Moriyasu Kirin Cup Asian Cup

Japan national football team manager Hajime Moriyasu has announced a 31-man squad for a series of four international friendly matches scheduled for late September and early October. This selection marks the team's first major activity following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The squad features four new call-ups: Kuryu Matsuki (Southampton), Kaina Tanimura (Yokohama F. Marinos), Shuto Nakano (Sanfrecce Hiroshima), and Shunsuke Saito (Westerlo). Moriyasu stated that the selection aims to build momentum toward the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, emphasizing a policy of continuity rather than a complete overhaul of the roster.

The upcoming schedule includes matches against Uruguay on September 24 in Sendai, Venezuela on September 28 in Hiroshima, and Ecuador on October 1 in Yokohama. The series will conclude on October 5 with a match against either Panama or New Zealand in Tokyo. DAZN has announced it will provide free live streaming for the matches against Venezuela and the final match in October.
