Japan observes Koromogae seasonal clothing ritual
Japan maintains a centuries-old tradition known as Koromogae, a ritualized seasonal change of clothing. Historically tracing back to the 8th century via China, the practice was formalized for the samurai class by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th century.
According to the Japan Foundation, the ritual typically occurs twice a year, around June 1st and October 1st. Rather than purchasing new items, the practice involves transitioning stored seasonal clothing into the daily wardrobe. In some households, the ritual extends beyond apparel to include the changing of bedding, curtains, and various household items to align with the new season.
