Japan observes Railway Day marking historical rail development

October 14 marks Railway Day in Japan, a day established in 1994 to commemorate the opening of the country’s first railway line between Shinbashi and Yokohama in 1872. The day serves to promote public understanding and interest in the rail industry through various events organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, JR companies, and private railway operators.

Railways play a critical role in Japan as low-CO2 high-speed transportation, a driver for tourism, essential living infrastructure for local residents, and a central component of the national logistics network. Historical milestones include the original construction challenges, such as building embankments over the sea to accommodate land acquisition difficulties, which left various historical remnants in areas like Tsurumi and near modern-day Takanawa Gateway Station.
