Argentina and Japan agree on beef export terms for vaccination zones

Argentina and Japan have reached a historic sanitary agreement that allows for the export of beef and beef tongue from Argentina's foot-and-mouth disease-free zones with vaccination. This agreement expands upon the existing access granted in 2018, which was limited to the Patagonia region (a zone free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination).

The new deal covers the northern regions of Argentina, where much of the country's livestock production is concentrated. A key component of the agreement is the export of beef tongue, a product with high demand in Japanese gastronomy and a significantly lower tariff (12%) compared to traditional beef cuts (38%).

While the agreement is a major milestone for the Argentine livestock sector, exports cannot begin immediately. Japanese authorities must first conduct audits of Argentina's sanitary systems and inspect specific meat-processing establishments. Industry experts estimate that the first shipments could potentially occur during the first quarter of 2027, pending these official certifications.
