Japan high school tuition waivers expand choice for 60% of parents

A survey conducted by Meiko Network Japan among 1,000 parents of third-year junior high school students reveals the impact of high school tuition waivers in Japan. Approximately 60% of parents feel that the tuition waivers have expanded their options when choosing a high school, with 45.1% noting that private high schools have become more accessible compared to previous years.

Despite the reduction in tuition, economic anxiety remains high. Roughly 68.8% of parents expressed concern regarding costs other than tuition, such as school trips, entrance fees, and uniforms. Additionally, 56.7% of respondents expressed anxiety regarding the reorganization and consolidation of public high schools due to declining birthrates, a factor they believe will influence school selection.
