Japan pension system details premiums and public servant benefits

Japan's pension system involves specific rules regarding insurance premiums and benefits for both private-sector employees and public servants. Under the Employees' Pension Insurance, premiums for bonuses are calculated at a rate of 18.3%, which is split equally between the employer and the employee. There is a monthly cap of 1.5 million yen for the standard bonus amount; if multiple bonuses are paid in the same month, they are aggregated toward this limit.

Since the unification of pension systems in October 2015, public servants and private-sector employees both participate in the Employees' Pension Insurance. While they share the same basic structure—consisting of a basic pension and an earnings-related pension—public servants have access to a unique supplementary system known as the Retirement Pension Benefit. This includes lifelong and fixed-term retirement pensions, which are calculated based on a 1.5% accrual rate from standard monthly remuneration and bonuses.
