Japan pension system: Understanding statements and reporting requirements
Recent information regarding Japan's public pension system highlights how beneficiaries can interpret their pension statements and the importance of administrative compliance.
For individuals under age 50, the ‘Nenkin定期便’ (Pension Regular Service) displays pension amounts based on current contribution records rather than projected future totals. For example, a 40-year-old with an annual income of 5 million yen might see a monthly figure of 80,000 yen, but this does not account for future contributions. Simulations suggest that if such an individual continues working until age 60, the monthly amount could increase to approximately 158,000 yen.
Additionally, the Japan Pension Service will begin sending ‘Status Reports’ (Genkyo-todoke) to individuals born in November starting October 29, 2026. These reports are sent to those whose existence cannot be verified through the Basic Resident Register network. Failure to submit these reports by the end of the recipient's birth month may result in a temporary suspension of pension payments.
