Japan pest control complaints rise amid deceptive advertising

Consumer complaints regarding pest and wildlife control services in Japan have increased 2.7 times over the last five years. According to the National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan, consultations rose from 854 in fiscal 2018 to 2,290 in fiscal 2023. A significant surge has been noted among younger demographics, with consultations from individuals in their teens and 20s rising from 35 to 552 during the same period.

Many disputes stem from deceptive online advertising. Consumers often report being lured by low-cost advertisements—such as services starting from 500 yen—only to receive estimates exceeding 100,000 or 200,000 yen upon arrival. In response to the lack of price transparency, where a study of 1,010 companies found that two out of three do not list prices online, the “Gaiju Kaichu Kyokujo Match” map has been launched. This tool allows users to compare local exterminators and their pricing structures before requesting on-site visits.

Service providers like Kabushiki Kaisha ON offer specialized removal for animals including rats, civets, and bats, providing services such as entry point sealing and disinfection. While many companies do not list fixed prices due to the variable nature of damage assessment, experts advise consumers to verify whether a company offers free estimates and clear pricing methodologies to avoid unexpected costs.
