Japan pledges support for Yemen stability and maritime security

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council President, Rashad al-Alimi, to reaffirm Japan’s support for the Yemeni government and regional stability. Motegi emphasized that Yemen’s stability is a strategic pillar for international security, particularly due to its location near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Japan is providing various forms of assistance, including food aid approved in July and financial and human resources for the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen. As a member of the Yemen Maritime Security Partnership, Japan is also working to develop the capabilities of the Yemeni Coast Guard to enhance maritime law enforcement and support a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Additionally, Motegi condemned recent attacks by Houthi militias and stressed the necessity of a peace process. He also noted an increase in Yemeni students receiving Japanese government scholarships, expressing hope that they will contribute to Yemen’s future reconstruction.
