Japan PM Sanae Takaichi's Sleep‑Deprivation Post Sparks Debate
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi posted on X during the three‑day Marine Day holiday that she managed only five hours of sleep, adding that “zero to three hours of sleep has become the norm” since taking office. The lengthy post, which also described her ironing and sewing chores, drew intense political debate. Opposition lawmakers criticised the extreme work schedule as risky for decision‑making, with one citing “sleep deprivation can impair judgment like drunkenness.” Health experts warned that chronic lack of sleep threatens cognitive function, emotional regulation and cardiovascular health. Party officials defended Takaichi, emphasizing her dedication to the nation, while some senior LDP members privately urged her to rest. The controversy has intensified scrutiny of Japan’s overwork culture and raised concerns about the Prime Minister’s wellbeing amid a weakening yen and slipping approval ratings.
