Japan PM Takaichi outlines economic growth and yen stability plans

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has outlined an economic agenda focused on promoting growth and increasing Japan's supply capacity through strategic investments in growth industries and crisis management. In an upcoming policy speech to parliament, Takaichi is expected to present a five-year implementation plan for a national growth strategy aimed at creating a virtuous cycle of increased employment, income, and tax revenue.

To support households, the Prime Minister intends to seek public support for a bill to lower the consumption tax on food and beverages. Regarding fiscal management, Takaichi stated that the government aims to secure necessary resources without relying on deficit-covering bonds to maintain market confidence.

Addressing currency concerns, Takaichi clarified that her administration's policies are not intended to manipulate exchange rates, asserting that strengthening economic competitiveness will naturally bolster confidence in the yen. She also noted that she raised the issue of the yen's undervaluation with U.S. President Donald Trump during a meeting last month. This comes as the Bank of Japan maintains a policy rate of 1.25%, even as the yen faces volatility against the dollar.
