Japan PM Takaichi's Cabinet Approval Slips Over Imperial Law Revision

Recent opinion polls show Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet approval falling sharply. A Jiji Press survey recorded a 49.0% approval rate, the lowest since the cabinet took office in October, while the Mainichi Shimbun poll placed support at 41%, a drop of ten points, with disapproval rising to 44%.

The declines are attributed to the government’s push to amend the Imperial House Law—allowing paternal‑line male descendants from former royal branches to be adopted—combined with what critics describe as heavy‑handed management of Diet proceedings. Analysts also point to broader economic concerns: inflation outpacing wage growth, and unfulfilled promises such as parliamentary seat reductions and a food‑price tax cut, which have alienated younger voters who feel the administration is not addressing their cost‑of‑living worries.
