Aiso, Japan, police arrest man for impersonating officer to scam elderly woman

A 47-year-old man was arrested in Aiso, Shiga Prefecture, after attempting to defraud a 93-year-old woman by impersonating a police officer. The suspect contacted the woman via telephone on October 21, claiming that unauthorized withdrawals had been made from her bank account.

To facilitate the scam, the man instructed the woman to lock her account and insisted that authorities needed to inspect her bank card. He proposed sending an investigator to her home to collect the card in person. The woman became suspicious of the scheme and consulted her son, who then contacted the actual police.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the woman's residence ahead of the suspect. When the man arrived at the scheduled time to collect the card, he was immediately taken into custody. Local authorities noted that the elderly woman remained composed and handled the situation effectively. An investigation is ongoing to determine if other individuals were involved in the organized fraud attempt.
