Japan prefectures report record numbers of centenarians

Japanese prefectures Aomori and Nagasaki are reporting record numbers of residents aged 100 and older, highlighting the ongoing demographic shift toward an aging population.

In Aomori Prefecture, the number of centenarians reached 1,003 as of September 1, marking the first time the figure has exceeded 1,000. This is approximately double the number recorded ten years ago. Local health officials noted that while the growth rate fluctuated recently, the overall trend remains upward due to medical advancements and increased awareness of preventative care.

In Nagasaki Prefecture, the number of centenarians is expected to reach a record high of 1,709. The prefecture's aging rate stands at 34.81%, which is the 9th highest in Japan and exceeds the national average. Data shows that women make up 91% of the centenarian population in Nagasaki. Projections suggest the prefecture's aging rate could reach 40.9% by 2040, increasing the demand for medical and nursing care services.
