Japan prepares for amended Personal Information Protection Act
Organizations in Japan are preparing for significant changes to the Personal Information Protection Act. Following the establishment of amendments on July 10, 2026, new regulations are expected to take effect in 2028. These updates include measures for appropriate data utilization in the context of accelerating AI integration, as well as new penalty systems to ensure regulatory effectiveness.
To assist with these transitions, the Japan Information Economy and Data Promotion Association (JIPDEC) will host a seminar on October 27, 2026, featuring legal experts to discuss the overview of the amended law and implementation policies. Additionally, the Japan Privacy Certification Association is offering a series of free webinars designed for personnel new to privacy compliance. These sessions cover fundamental rules, safety management measures, and third-party data provision, addressing the increasing complexity of regulations and the rise in corporate penalties, which can reach up to 100 million yen.
